Book Review: Mine Till Midnight – Lisa Kleypas

Mine Till Midnight
Author: Lisa Kleypas
Series: The Hathaways #1
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks
My Rating:

Summary:

Their lives defy convention.
When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan.
Their desire consumes them both…
Wealthy beyond most men’s dreams, Cam has tired of society’s petty restrictions and longs to return to his “uncivilized” Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship – but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter…

First Sentence: Finding one person in a city of nearly two million was a formidable task.

My Review:

I’ve always hated trying new authors that write historical romance novels for two main reasons: 1)The writing is awkward and not at all engaging or 2) The romance isn’t satisfying – the book focuses only on the romance and nothing else or vice-versa. When I first saw the high ratings of Lisa Kleypas’ The Hathaways series, I was skeptical. Should I give her books a chance or would that be a waste of time? After reading Mine Till Midnight, my answer would be yes, give Lisa Kleyas’ books a chance, although, like every other book, there are a couple of things I could have done without in Mine Till Midnight.

Amelia, the heroine in Mine Till Midnight was such an easy character to relate to (possibly because I have a younger sister that I constantly worry after). Being the eldest, Amelia was constantly worrying about her family and their actions, which was sweet. If I was in her situation, I would be a controlling, worried mess like her, maybe even more so.

And Cam, Cam, Cam. He was just so sweet. I love how he knew Amelia wasn’t as experienced, so he took his time with her. I love how he took most of watching her family’s burden off her shoulders and showed her what true love and happiness is without worrying. I love how he snuck and stuck his ring on Amelia’s finger after their first time together. He also managed to grab an unexpected chuckle out of me several times, a task that is no easy feat.

I hated it when people were so discriminated against Cam just because he was a Gypsy. I didn’t get how he could stand it. (Although it was “expected” in that era.) Why don’t people just get that they have no control over the race in which they were born under? It’s not like he wanted to be born a Gypsy. Cam didn’t even act like the typical Gypsy stereotype; he was rich, well-respected, and three-fifths a gentlemen, so there’s no reason why people should discriminate against him. When people just bash on him for being a Gypsy, I just wanted to reach into the book and shove their head against the wall. A bit violent, but that’s the price of being so judgmental for things he had absolutely no control over.

I will definitely check out Lisa Kleypas’ other historical romance novels, especially the rest of her The Hathaways series, like now. (I already reserved six of them from my local libraries.) I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Hathaways next.

I love historical romances so this sounds fantastic! I also don’t like awkward writing and I’m glad this one didn’t have that. I can’t wait to meet Cam. He sounds like a fun character. And Amelia sounds great too. I love it when you can easily relate to a main character! I’m glad you enjoyed this! Great review! :D

Prejudice against Gypsies is still something that happens today and is definitely prevalent in history so it is pretty accurate. Still annoying and frustrating though!
