Book Review: The Lost Prince – Julie Kagawa

The Lost Prince
Author: Julie Kagawa
Series: Call of the Forgotten #1
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
My Rating:

Summary:

Don’t look at Them.
Never let Them know
you can see Them.
That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs – including his reputation – begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.
Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world – the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

First Sentence: My name is Ethan Chase.

My Review:

The cover alone would make you want to read this book. Just look at it. Who knew four year old Ethan would turn out this hot? -drools- Ahem, okay, ignore me for a moment.

And wow. Julie Kagawa did it again. I have absolutely no clue how she can write such long descriptive sentences without The Lost Prince being draggy, repetitive, or boring, but she did it. Oh indeed, she did.

A lot of things has changed for Ethan these past years. He’s no longer the shy, sweet, carefree four year old we met in The Iron King; instead he’s tough, furious, and carrying a lot of angst, basically an asshole if you sum it up. I can’t blame him though, he’s justified for being the way he is. Hell, if I had an older sister and she was forced to stay in the Nevernever forever, I’ll do a lot worse.

I know we were supposed to like Kenzie, but to me, she’s just an okay character. She’s not exactly memorable. I like that she brings out Ethan’s good side, but that’s it. Kenzie is a little too stubborn for my taste, but that’s what makes her her.

I wish that we readers can get more background information on Keirran and Annwyl’s relationship. Right now I’m just plainly accepting their relationship, but I can’t really understand how deep their relationship goes since we never got to see how it developed. Hopefully we can find out more in the next book so I’ll be able to root for them as a couple.

Am I the only one happy that we get to see Meghan, Ash, and Puck again? I could feel a big bright smile on my face when they all appeared. Boy, did I miss them. They better appear in the next book too.

I wonder how the sequel to The Lost Prince will play out. I understand the Forgotten fey’s position and why they did the things they did. I also understand why Keirran feels the way he does about the Forgotten fey. However, I don’t think there are any possible available solution to this problem that will make everyone happy in the end. The ultimate question is, where is Julie Kagawa going with this series?

    Hi Kelly,

Thanks for visiting our site and for being our 400th whale. I’ am also a huge fan of Julie Kagawa and like this book too. I also agree with you when it comes to Kenzie. I didn’t connect with her. Plus the romance angle is a bit meh… Love your site. Followed back.

Hopefully we’ll be able to connect with Kenzie more in the next book. She’s awesome, but I just didn’t click with her.
I’m glad you love my site! (:

OKAY SO I’M HERE TO COMMENT ON YOUR STS. BUT, LIKE THE INSANE STALKER I AM, I WENT THROUGH YOUR BLOG ARCHIVE AND I SAW THIS REVIEW AND GOT *REALLY EXCITED*

    Like REALLY excited.

Can I say really quickly that I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU? ESPECIALLY ABOUT ASH AND MEGHAN AND PUCK. I’m so obsessed I literally bookmarked the pages where they showed up because it’s not like I’m THAT insane…maybe.

    Awesome review!

Thanks for sharing your review! I just got this a little while ago with the Iron Frey series. I cannot wait to start it. And yes I was swayed by the cover also (;! Very enticing. I hope I enjoy this series as much as you did. Thanks again!

This book got me very excited when I first learned about it. I agree with your review almost 100%. I just think that Annwyl was a little fishy. The vibe that I got from her was that she was very deceitful. I also thought that Kenzie was the kind of girl that would be good for anyone that she met. She was one of my favorite characters, because she did so much good and had a great impact on all of the characters, even with her being just a human with no training.

Hmm, the vibe I got from Annwyl was that she was a meek girl that needed to be protected, but who knows? We don’t really know her very well.
And yeah, Kenzie was awesome! I totally love her spunk! :D

I’ve read only The Iron Fey series till now. Call of the Forgotten is linked to The Iron Fey, so I must start this too, I really want to see what’s going to happen to Ethan. Kagawa’s writing is amazing, and I’m even more in love with fey after I’ve read her works! :D

Don’t fall in love with the fey Diana, remember, they have so many tricks up their sleeves!
I personally think Call of the Forgotten is even better than the Iron Fey series. I hope you’ll like Ethan once you get to know him! (:

I haven’t read any of Julie Kagawa’s books yet. Should I read the Iron fey series first?

I actually recommend you to read The Immortal Rules first. In my opinion, that series of hers is better than the Iron Fey series. :D

I found this yesterday when I was just roaming around Goodreads. It sounds like the author had another series before this and may have some connections in between? Should I read that one too so I can better appreciate this book? I love good writing styles where you are able to get top notch description imageries without feeling the book is verbose and boring. I certainly have high hope for this one now :)

The cover is pretty awesome and I love that she is continuing the series but now it is about someone else including some of the characters we love.
