The amazing Paola and the lovely Alix from A Novel Idea came up with an unique event: Love Triangle 101, which takes place from July 8 to July 26. When I saw the sign-ups for it, I just knew that I had to join in the fun.
What I’m doing today is dissecting the love triangle in the Shadow Falls series by C.C. Hunter. For those of you who don’t know the series, you can read my Series Overview.
As I’ve mentioned in my Series Overview, the love triangle in the Shadow Falls series lasted for all five books in the series. FIVE books. That’s five books of the main character, Kylie, going I want Lucas. No, wait, I want Derek. No, Lucas. Nah, Derek is better. And so on.
What I’m trying to say, really, is why the Shadow Falls series has a love triangle that just doesn’t work. Plus, it’s a really unhealthy love triangle.
Why? I’ll show you why.
I’ll prove this using the first book alone.
Born at Midnight: I’m sorry, but I kind of forgot, Born at Midnight does not contain a love triangle, but a love square. In Born at Midnight, Kylie meets Derek for the first time and meets Lucas (again! She knew him from when they were kids). Kylie is already torn between the two, of course, plus her ex-boyfriend Trey, who now likes this “slut”. (Of course, since your ex-boyfriend has a new girlfriend, his new girlfriend is automatically a “slut.”)
- Derek: Derek was attracted to Kylie from the beginning and stalked her wherever she went. (Hello Edward #2.) Kylie keeps thinking that Derek reminds her of her ex-boyfriend Trey. (Hello rebound anyone?) So Kylie avoids him. Then proceeds to think about kissing him and almost does about a couple of chapters later. Derek, to make Kylie jealous, turns his attention to another girl, which makes Kylie mad and avoids him even more, if that was even possible.
- Lucas: Kylie’s childhood “friend,” if you can even call him that. She thinks he killed her cat when they were little, but still has a major crush on him anyways. (Are you crazy girl because that’s totally not what a sane person will do.) Kylie also proceeds to make out with him later on in the book.
- Trey: Looks like Derek as mentioned above. Trey comes back to camp, begging Kylie to take him back and even confessing his love for her. Kylie and Trey then proceeds to make out and she accidentally calls him Derek. This is too funny to be true right?
The Love Triangle (I Mean Square) In The First Book Alone: Eek. So not my thing. And that love square? No thanks.
Jessi from Auntie Spinelli Reads described the love square in Born at Midnight a lot better than I did.
Believe me, I’ve read the four other books in the series (don’t ask me why, maybe I enjoy the torture) and it doesn’t get any better. That’s why I think that Shadow Falls is the perfect example of a love triangle, I mean square, that doesn’t work. But hey, at least it wasn’t a love square after Born at Midnight.
