Welcome to Day Four of my Blogoversary!
Today, I’ll be trying to convince you guys to give the awesome Unraveling series by Elizabeth Norris a chance along with the help of fellow determined book bloggers!
Here’s what fellow book bloggers have to say about the Unraveling series:
Jessi from Auntie Spinelli Reads:
Both Unraveling and Unbreakable are mind blowing; packed with action and fast pacing that keeps you on the edge of your seat! They are full of twists and turns to give the element of surprise, and the world building is cinematic. I love the characters – Janelle is a kick-ass heroine and Ben is the perfect swoony boy-next-door-type! The Unraveling duology is the perfect dose of sci-fi with a pinch of romance that I would recommend to all types of readers.
Wendy from Book Scents:
I adored Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris! I am a big fan of the TV show 24 and each chapter of Unraveling is titled with a countdown, counting down to…what?? We don’t know, and that gives the book a sense of urgency, momentum and drive. I loved the action show feel of Unraveling because I was always hooked and always wanting to know what was coming next. For me, I related strongly to the main character Janelle. She’s a normal teenage girl, taking AP classes, and with a very strong sense of curiosity. I was just like her back in high school. That really helped suck me into her story.
The other aspect that I liked but maybe also hated, is the fact that Elizabeth Norris is NOT afraid to kill people off. In my head, I tell myself that this is good! It’s realistic! It gives the story suspense! But in my heart, it just kills me because she writes such fantastic characters! The writing and storytelling is superb – Unraveling and its sequel Unbreakable are definitely a sci-fi series to check out!!
Danielle from What Danielle Did Next:
Unraveling is a welcome breath of fresh air in a YA genre that for me was becoming predictable and stagnant. Strong female heroines are present in many Young Adult books but ones that remain that way? Ones that don’t forget their friends, their ambitions, and their sense of individuality once a cute boy winks at them? Not so much.
Janelle was my main reason for loving this series. I was captivated by her strength, her loyalty and her level headedness. Her sense of responsibility towards her loved ones and friends at a time when many teenagers would have huffed and yelled was admirable.
The family dynamic present in Unraveling was wonderful and so very absent from other books in this genre. Parents who are around? Parents who have an interest in their kids? Parents who are three-dimensional and have failings, weaknesses but still remember to check if their kids are alive? I think my incredulousness has made it clear how rare it is in YA and how incredible it was that Liz Norris created a family in her books that was authentic. It made reading it extra special for me.
The word to sum up the series for me is “gut-punch”…Okay that’s possibly two words but when you read the books you’ll forgive me. Liz has her boxing gloves on and is more than willing to deliver the painful, devastating hits to her readers through her words and boy do they sting. The emotion she injects into her characters’ experiences that is then felt by the reader is heart-wrenching and real and I loved it! It’s rare to find an author brave enough to take the risks Norris takes in her books and the pay-off is more than worth it.
It is a series filled with realised and compelling characters (did you know teens swear? scandalous I know!) and a unrelenting, fast paced plot that is both thrilling and filled with emotion and definitely one not to be missed!
I totally agree with all of their points! Unraveling is a fast-paced read with tons of action and most of all, a swoon-worthy guy because I know how much you guys love those hot boys. ;D
The main aspect I love about the series is that Elizabeth Norris isn’t afraid, at all, to kill any characters off and break our hearts. Her books are realistic – and honestly so.
