Let’s Speculate: Do You Have The Time To Re-Read Books?

letsspeculate

Lately, I’ve been in a re-reading books mood. I want to read some of my select favorites like Scarlet and Dare You To. I also want to give some of the books I didn’t really like another chance like Unspoken and Something Strange and Deadly.

The only problem is that there are just so many new books being released each week. During this year alone, there were only four weeks in the year where there wasn’t any books being released that week that I was looking forward to reading. That’s about 46 weeks in a year where there’s at least one book being released that I’m looking forward to reading.

whichone

So many books to read…Which one do I pick?

Before my sophomore year of college started, this wouldn’t be a problem at all. I would read 14 books a month easily. Now, I can barely read 7 books a month, never mind 14.

The question is: How do I have the time to read them all?

The most important question is: How do I have the time to re-read my favorite books or give some books I’ve already read another chance?

Have you ever thought of this? Do you have the same problem that I do? How do you deal with it all?

I completely agree with you. Being in the final year of college I can completely understand the problem you are facing because I myself feel frustrated at times when I cannot get the time to read a book that’s sitting on my book shelf for weeks. Right now I’m burdened with review books and I don’t know how to even read all the fabulous books that are releasing nowadays, leave alone the topic of re-reading books. To be honest I never get the time to read the books that I have already read once and especially after starting blogging I’ve drowned myself in TBR lists which is growing at a rapid rate day by day. Can you suggest some way to cope up with this mess and get time for enjoying the books that once won my heart? I would be grateful if you could suggest a way out. Thanks.

I generally don’t re-read books – there are way too many books on my TBR to even entertain that idea. However, when a sequel releases more than a year later and I don’t fully remember the plot of the earlier one, I re-read it. Otherwise, the only series that I have ever re-read is Harry Potter and Twilight saga.

I make time :) I always read several books at the same time, so when I feel like re-reading one I just pick it up along side the other books. It’s important for me that I get to read the books I want to read. I read because I love it, so I want to enjoy whatever I read :) I try to not-stress over the fact that there are so many other books I still haven’t read, because in the end, you can never read them all.

Totally understandable, though I haven’t hit college yet. Even now, I don’t really RE-READ a book unless I have too, or I’m just so in the mood too. Ususally I just have my favorite scenes that I love to turn to and re-read, for a swoon or something like that. If I really forgot about some books and the conclusion is coming out, I might re-read but that doesn’t normally happen. (Unless it’s Allegiant. :D ) Usually re-reads are just skims so hit all my favorite parts. Haha. I’m not a huge re-reader, I much prefer to read new books, but I will admit some old book nostalgia is fun sometimes.

I’ve been having the same problem lately too – with all the tours and arcs I joined and requested on NetGalley, I’ve barely had enough time to read the books on my shelf that I purchased for myself, much less re-read! But I’ve been getting the urges to read Ender’s Game and Harry Potter again, so I’m sure I’ll cut out some time soon so I can do that.

I actually made an exception this week, since I was a little bit ahead on my reviews, and re-read Angelfall since World After comes out next week. Now I’m all prepared for the new release!

This used to NEVER be a problem. I reread Harry Potter every year, HG once a year, all my favorites. If a new book in a series comes out, I HAVE to reread the others; it seems sacrelig not to.

But now that I’m a book blogger, I don’t exactly have time for that. I did reread the Divergent series, because it had been 1.5 years, and I’m planning to reread Enclave and Outpost in prep for Horde. But sadly, I don’t think I will get to Harry Potter this year.

Ultimately only the very favorites will ever get reread, because sometimes I need to be reminded why I loved it so much in the first place. Plus, books can mean different things at different times in my life.

    I hardly ever re-read books.
I’ll re-read books like PostSecret and newspaper annuals and other non-fiction books but not from cover to cover, just favorite parts.
I also recently re-read The Little Prince, because I was seven years old when I last read it!
I have been wanting to re-read Harry Potter, but I think I’ll listen to the audiobooks.
I’m already struggling to deal with the fact that I won’t be able to read all the books I want to in one lifetime. I can’t waste time re-reading something unless I have a realllly good reason.

Oh, the eternal problem of full time studying/working book bloggers. At this precise moment, I do not have time to reread my favourites as much as I REALLY want to. Study takes up to much and I have books I need to read and review in the small amount of free time I have. Hopefully after my last exam (TODAY DKSDKSHD) I will have more free time but even then I need to read and review my massive ARC pile. Sometimes though you just have to say “I’LL READ WHAT I WANT” and ignore all the other more important books to revisit those worlds you love.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with this problem!
I re-read sometimes (mostly just the HP books) but I’ve found recently I just can’t.
There’s so many books I have and so many new books releasing, I can just barely keep up.

Before I became a co-blogger it was always easy to re-read books. I always had the time. Now that I’m a full-time student in college and a co-blogger that time seems so far away. I don’t think I’ll ever get to re-read any of the old series I first started years ago. I just simply don’t have the time. But I think we both should find that time someday. Maybe do a re-read week or something every other month. That would be great. Good luck! ^_^

I’m so behind on my reading I can’t even consider rereading my favorites. I want to reread Enclave and Outpost before I get Horde. I want to reread The Art of Racing in the Rain. I’m always in a constant state of rereading Marley and Me. I’ve got so many books from the library right now….
Oh! I also wanted to reread 13 Reasons Why because I read it so long ago, I feel like I missed the point of it entirely. I also want to reread the Morganville Vampires series which is a problem because there’s 15 books(:
No rereading for me for a while :/
Hopefully I’ll find the time soon!
    Hope you do too(:

This is a HUGE problem for me. I really want to reread Divergent and Insurgent so I can read Allegiant. I’m just not finding the time!! I’m still determined too…but my TBR screams for attention with new books. Plus, I’d love to reread some of my favourites from a few years ago and see if I still like them. No time. *sigh*

I make time for re-reading especially when it comes to books in a series. Like, just a few days ago, I re-read The Selection before I read The Elite. Tomorrow, I’ll be re-reading Midnight City before getting to The Severed Tower, its sequel. I just HAVE to re-read because my memory is terrible and I’d hate to have forgotten anything once I read the sequel. As for standalones… Well, only the awesome-est ones get a re-read <3

I almost never re-read books, but lately I have had a few series that I want to re-read so my mind is refreshed for when the next book comes out. But the problem is I have so many books on my tbr list that I have to decide whether I want to emerse myself in a familiar story or move on to a new one…so difficult to decide!

I am so happy that you posted thins because i am ALWAYS having this struggle. I have probably fully re-read two books this year at most! I generally like to re-read a little before reading a sequel or finally seeing the movie of a book but I never have the time cause there are always new books I want, then new books to my shelves that I need to read and there honestly aren’t enough hours in the day… I’m hoping to scroll your comments to find out how to deal with this! <3 :)

I definitely have the same problem, Kelly! I love re-reading, and I want to re-read my favorites when I feel calm and relaxed… but that’s pretty much limited to a few weeks per year. So usually during winter and summer breaks when I was home from college, I can devour one book a night, leaving plenty of room for re-reads. Even though I have shorter breaks now, I plan on doing the same thing. Hopefully it’ll work out! :)

I don’t usually reread, unless I’ve finished every single book on my shelf, or I need to refresh myself before reading then next book in a series. And since the latter rarely happens, and I am NEVER close to finishing my TBR pile, I don’t think I have much time for rereading really XD

I can totally relate to this. So many books that I need to read and just no time to do it. I decreased my Goodreads challenge for the year and dropped all the rest I was doing because the year ended up being crazy so I knew I wouldn’t make any of them. So now, I don’t HAVE to read anything else this year since completing my challenges is the basis for my motivation, so now I am re-reading a ton so I can catch up on series mostly. I’m re-reading a bunch of books I read before I began my blog so I can write proper reviews for them. It makes for a good encouragement for me. But if you really want to re-read something, then do it. I can understand a bunch is being released, but if you don’t follow up on the desire and read something you want, then reading will stop being fun. There is nothing wrong with reading less a month than you used to. You are still reading and so long as you are still enjoying it, that is all that matters. 2013 was a horrible year. Everyone seems to have been super busy. Just because you are down to 7 a month now doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get back to that 14 later. Keeping up with life and your health is more important. Hobbies come second, but just make sure they stay fun.

For me, it is work and motherhood at this point in my life that prevents me from reading as much. I will re-read a select few books occasionally when I need to decompress when life gets too stressful and I need a break. :) it is comforting and relaxing when I need it the most.

I think this is a common problem facing people who like to read, but find their time restricted by “real life” – working, studying, being a parent, etc

I work full time, and make time for my reading and blogging by cutting down on my TV watching etc. Sometimes I miss some programs but with the internet etc I can quite easily catch up with them another time (or there are endless repeats!). I have read close on to 90 books already this year – and not one a re-read! There’s simply too many new books out there to read. Next year I might have to reassess what I read, and perhaps do what some of my friends do, and dedicate a whole month to simply re–reading books they love.

The Guardian newspaper has done an article on a related topic of what a reader gets through re-reading, and whether modern books are up to the task of being re-read
    http://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2013/oct/31/re-reading-rereading-man-booker

Here’s my take on the topic

I’m with you completely! Especially since starting blogging, when I find out about new books at a faster rate and want to read new books quickly to continue posting fresh reviews, I don’t do much re-reading at all. Sometimes it makes me wish for high school and tons of time to read in class :)

Great post, I can definitely see where you are coming from. I feel like I want to read so many new books I just can;t squeeze the old ones back in. But what I have been doing is listening to the audiobook versions when I want to re read. That way I am usually doing something else like driving but still enjoying the great book!

I certainly don’t have time to re-read books when there are so many others that want to be read. I only re-read some for a specific reason – like it has been a while since I read it and the movie is coming out (for example I’m reading Catching Fire now).

So….just realized I never commented on this. >.<

I have the same problem! I used to read 10-15 books a month, and now I'm lucky to get 5-7. Aside from Divergent (which I remembered nothing of and never reviewed on the blog anyway), I haven't re-read anything in at least a year. I just don't have the time to! There's SO many new books, and my TBR is already daunting. I have too many books I want to read and too many I need to review to waste time reading something I've already read. Which is sad, because there's a couple I'd love to read again. :(

I don’t have ARCs showing up in my mailbox, and I’m usually broke, so I don’t usually read new releases. I don’t feel that obligations some of the more prominent book bloggers have to push aside old favorites in favor for keeping up to date in the book world. It’s kind of a double edge sword though. Would I like new books often? Heck yes! But, on the other hand, I do have the time to spare to spend on old favorites. To be honest, I don’t normally re-read books. But, I adore the Harry Potter series, so I usually re-read some of the books each year. The mood typically strikes around Fall time (you know, when young witches and wizards are catching the train back to Hogwarts?) I’ve re-read the entire series in a few months once. But, usually I’ll just re-read two or three books a year.

I try to re-read one a year, and sometimes it takes me the entire year to do it. They are always books I have read long ago. I am ancient, and semi-retired, so I have more free time than a college student. I don’t remember having time to do much pleasure reading period, when I was in college, let alone re-reading. You will have plenty of time for re-reading in the future. I woukdn’t worry about it.
