Interview with Rachel Hawkins
1. Hi Rachel! First of all, I absolutely adore your books and you! Can you tell us something we don’t know about you, something we won’t discover from a simple Google search?
I used to write a LOT of Doctor Who Fanfic (there was kissing in it, and I am NOT ASHAMED.)
2. In Rebel Belle, there is a supernatural creature called the Paladin. Are they actually real mythical creatures you’ve researched about or are they your own creations?
Paladin is a real term for a type of knight (and it’s used a lot in things like Dungeons and Dragons, a fact that horrifies Harper!) Now, they’re not usually Super Powered Up like Harper is, so I definitely played fast and loose with a real term, but such is the fun of writing!
3. In Rebel Belle, Harper, a female character, plays a role guys in books, television shows, and the movies usually plays [i.e. her being a protector]. What prompted you to switch the gender roles around?
I honestly believe that 99% of the time, things are better when you genderflip them. It’s a writing exercise I sometime do with school groups, asking them to re-tell a familiar story with the genders swapped. Doing that makes us look at the familiar in new ways, makes us really explore WHY we think of gender roles like we do. Plus it’s just FUN. :)
4. Your books always have the perfect amount of humor, sass, and snark and in Rebel Belle, it was no different. How do you know when you have the right amount of humor, sass, and snark in your books?
I’ll be honest, sometimes there is TOO MUCH humor, and my editors are like, “Whoa, girl, pull back now.” ;) But balancing humor, sass, and snark is my favorite part of writing my books, so I don’t make a concerted effort to mix it in. If I’m lucky, it just shows up!
5. Are there any parts in Rebel Belle or Miss Mayhem where you just stopped writing and was oh my god – I can’t believe I just wrote this?
The Shoe Murder in Rebel Belle is something I STILL can’t believe I got away with, and there’s a fight scene at a pageant in Miss Mayhem that I giggled all the way through writing.
This is awesome Kelly…like i’ve mentioned before i have yet to read her Rebel Belle. I am a fan of her Hex Hall series. I hope that my copy will arrive soon. This sounds really really fun. And I need fun these days!
I loved the first book of this series and I’m looking forward to reading this one. Can’t wait!

I have been dying to read this book! I loved Rebel Belle and this book is one of my most anticipated reads. Due to me being an IDIOT back then, I am currently on a book ban and can’t buy this one until I have read all my other books. *cries.* Thank you for the interview though and I cannot wait to read it!
