Summary:

If only Jane’s Magic 8 Ball could tell her how to get through the summer. With her “perfect” sister, Margo, home for her “perfect” internship, Jane is not going to be able to spend the summer writing fan fiction, as she had planned. And her emergency babysitting job requires Jane to spend the whole summer in awkward proximity to her new crush, Teo, a nerdy-hot lifeguard with problems of his own. With his best friend out of town, Teo finds himself without anyone to confide in…except Jane. Will Jane and Teo be able to salvage each other’s summer? Even the Magic 8 Ball doesn’t have the answer…but signs point to yes.

First Sentence: Jane Connelly needed a job, and she needed it fast.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.

My Review:

I wasn’t a fan of Sandy Hall’s debut novel, A Little Something Different. It just didn’t work for me despite everyone else’s praises and love for it. So why did I decide to give Signs Point To Yes a try Kelly? you may wonder. Well, I didn’t obtain Signs Point To Yes by choice and when I was on the subway home, I randomly gave it a try and enjoyed the first few pages I’ve read. Therefore, I decided to give Sandy Hall’s latest a chance. I am sad to report that I was disappointed, again.

“Well, nothing, but I wanted you to know…”
“Okay, processing,” their dad said. (ARC 253)

One major problem in Signs Point To Yes was the way the characters talk. The teenagers don’t talk like their age, the males don’t talk like males, and even parents don’t talk like real parents unless they’re thirteen, which I highly doubt they are. I was cringing at the dialogue while I was reading and even gaping in disbelief over some because who on Earth say these things? Basically, if you want to read Signs Point To Yes, be prepared to throw out real life dialogue out the window in exchange for awkward, jilted simple dialogue.

A huge part of Signs Point To Yes was just filler. I can sum up the book in two short sentences – I’m not going to state them here as it’ll be considered a spoiler – which means that the entire book should be about an estimated hundred to a hundred and fifty pages long, which is currently half of the book. However, due to the many not-needed filler dialogue and incomplete/unexplained subplots (it’s a long story filled with spoilers), Signs Point To Yes is longer than it needed to be.

She sat down with her trusty Magic 8.
“Will Teo be okay?” she asked.
Most likely.
“Will Teo be better than okay?”
Cannot predict now. (ARC 187)

Overall, like A Little Something Different, Signs Point To Yes was sadly a disappointment. With unrealistic awkward dialogue, incomplete/unexplained subplots, and way too many pages, I think I will sadly give up on Sandy Hall’s other books.

Oh man, what a huge disappointment! I hate when characters don’t sound their age. How will they sound like realistic characters if they don’t? Sigh. It sounded so good, but as you have read two books from this author and I have read none I will differ to you :)

Great review! I was looking forward to reading this but there was one tiny bit doubt in my mind and I even got the chance to read it but I passed it up, somehow I don’t think this book is for me. But maybe I’ll give this book a chance in the future.

I haven’t read A Little Something Different, but I have read this one. And I definitely agree, for the most part. There were some cute little parts to the story, but all in all, I think it missed its target audience. I feel like, if it had been geared towards MG, it might have hit the nail on the head. Just seems a lot young for most YA, especially these days

Ah that’s too bad, it sounded like it had potential. Oh well, I think I’ll be skipping Sandy Hall for a while. Hope your next read is better! Thanks for the review!

I’ve seen a bit of hype surrounding this book, but one thing I have a ton of trouble getting past is inaccurate/cheesy dialogue :(

Good review. Too bad the book was a miss. I don’t like books where they put a lot of fillers or fluff.

I’m sorry this was such a miss! I hate when characters don’t sound at all how they should because it wrecks the whole tone of the book. Anyway, great review :)

Sorry you didn’t enjoy it, Kelly! On the contrary, I like this book and I don’t have any problem with the way the characters talk. But I guess we have a different opinion :D Anyway, great review <3

I did enjoy A Little Something Different, but it was not one of my favorites. I’m hoping this book is a little better for me!
