Hidden Identities & Origin Stories: Blog Tour + Super Villainous Playlist

Today I’m featuring a book we’re all waiting for – although we don’t have to wait that long anymore *winks* – RENEGADES by Marissa Meyer! When asked whether I wanted to be a hero – aka a Renegade – or a villain – aka an Anarchist, I obviously picked the Anarchists because duh!, we’re the ones that keep life interesting with a deep, sympathetic origin story. Today I created a lovely villainous playlist featuring songs us Anarchists will understand and enjoy.

Renegades
Author: Marissa Meyer
Series: Renegades #1
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy
Release Date: November 7, 2017
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers

Goodreads | Amazon | TBD

Summary:

Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies —humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Everyone knows that every great villain has a origin story. Why did the villain do the things they did? What made them the way they are? Why is the villain just so evil?

I’ve compiled a short list of songs that just inspired me, that makes you think from the villain’s point of view and maybe even sympathize with them.

Kelly’s Villainous Playlist

BOA – I Did It For Love

This song is the perfect villain origin story because lets face it, most villains do what they do because of love and betrayal.

Kwang-Ho Hong – Hurricane (from Death Note the Musical)

Guys. Guys. If you don’t listen to any of my songs on this playlist, at least listen to this song.

This song features the origin of Light’s story and shows how he turned out to be a villain. For those of you who don’t know, Light is from the manga and show Death Note, which is my favorite manga, EVER. Everyone should read it.

Kwang-Ho Hong definitely showcases Light’s personality well and does this song justice. HIS VOCALS. I love the slow progression from innocence to pure determination and just all that PASSION for his CAUSE.

Linkin Park – In the End

Lets face it, one of Linkin Park’s songs definitely belong on this playlist. Their songs capture the feeling of angst so perfectly and every time I hear this song, I picture how someone can struggle so much and so hard, until they got enough of everything and just broke free to become the “villain.”

Renegades is actually the first book I’ve read about superheroes and villains. Novels about such characters (e.g. Batman and Wonder Woman) have been trendy nowadays, but I never bothered to add them to my TBR because the film industry has already made me so familiar with the Marvel/DC universe. With that in mind, I probably wouldn’t have requested this book from the publisher if it wasn’t penned by one of my favorite authors. Marissa Meyer never fails to make me happy, so it should go without question that I’ll read anything written by her.
