Let’s Speculate: How Do You Deal With Reading Slumps?

letsspeculate

Every bookish blog I visit has their own form of discussion feature while I’m sitting here alone, thinking, hmm, what can I do to make my blog more exciting and unique? So I decided, why not start my own feature where I can talk about random bookish topics? And so, Let’s Speculate was created.

The topic I chose for this week is How Do You Deal With Reading Slumps? Every once in a while, I get into reading slumps. Reading slumps is probably the worse thing of being a book blogger. No reading equals no reviews equals no new material on your blog. So how do I get over reading slumps? Well, I have this list to help.

1. I watch television, namely Criminal Minds.
I hardly watch television since books are a much better company. However, when I’m in a reading slump, I catch up on Criminal Minds. It’s so addicting.

2. Try reading a new book.
Maybe you’ve read three books that you didn’t really like in a row lately. Don’t give up on a book yet, find one that looks extremely promising and read it!

3. Do your homework.
Nothing bores me more than homework. When I’m all done, I’ll be really grateful to get to read a book again.

4. Find and stalk new blogs.
This is almost what I always do when I’m in a reading slump. This way I meet new people and discover new awesome blogs to stalk. What else could be better than that?

5. Go book shopping.
Step into Barnes & Noble. There, you’ll find new books you want to read, see some gorgeous covers, and step out completely broke.

Gah, I hate reading slumps. But these are what I do too! Haha! Except I watch Suits or any sitcom. Hee. Now I’m thinking if I should have a discussion post too. Haha!

I have yet to find a way to deal with reading slumps that will stop it, which is sad. I only know when I might get them, for example since I am a mood reader if I am in the mood for a book that I don’t have and won’t be able to get for a while, I just can’t get out of that mood and all the other books just don’t sound good.

Another way I get into a reading slump is if I have a lot on my plate with school and everything else. Which is right now since my LIT teacher hates me and my math teacher just doesn’t get the term to much work.

How I try and deal with them is read one of my favorite books or just stop reading for a week and hope for the best. Although I will try your suggestion of going book shopping, I think that will help a lot.

I’ve recently gone through my own reading slump. Still actually on the edge of it, really. But that’s mostly because of school and the fact that I get distracted with my other hobbies. My reading slump is usually solved by a fantastic book that I just can’t put down so. =))

    Nice post, Kelly :D

Yes, school DEFINITELY causes a reading slump. All I’m reading are books assigned to me by schools now. ):

Book shopping definitely helps, especially if you find a book you REALLY want to read. ;D

Arg, the dreaded reading slump! I’m currently in the middle of one… I think I’ll just watch a couple of seasons of a TV show. Ya, that’s it! I’ll watch some TV then start a new book! :)

When I find myself in a slump, a surefire way to pull me back out is to either revisit a favorite novel or pick a book of my choosing. Something I either bought or got from the library as opposed to a book for review. Since I’m able to read at my own pace I don’t feel pressured by deadlines or the need to get a review written by a certain date.

I agree, stalking blogs is a great way to have some bookish fun, even when you don’t feel like reading a book. And it usually results in picking up a new book, in my case.

And I’m watching Veronica Mars too!!! <3

LOL yeah. I feel stalkerish especially when people have tracking on their sites and see that I’ve been browsing every single post on their site.
And yes, Veronica Mars is so awesome! :D<3

haha I know what you mean about how every blog you visit has a discussion feature but you. Every so often I do a discussion post & I have like no title, nothing. o.O I really should get organized soon. Anyways I love the title & your topic this week :D

I also watch very little tv but for some quality bf down time OR when I’m in a reading slump, tv helps a lot. I’ve gotten addicted to Doctor Who recently ♥ I also deal with a slump by blogging more, finding new blogs to stalk & generally roaming and checking those out! Book shopping is a good one too though ;)

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

      Thank you! :D
I was wondering if I should use the title “Let’s Speculate,” but I was like -shrugs- why not?
I would love to add having out with bf in my list, but I don’t have a boyfriend so :P

Reading slumps are the worst! I generally can’t do anything bookish at all when I’m in a reading slump. I just need a complete break from it. Generally, I turn to TV and the internets. :)
