Series Overview: The Unraveling Duology – Elizabeth Norris

unraveling   unbreakable

Series: Unraveling & Unbreakable
Author: Elizabeth Norris
Series: Unraveling
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy, Mystery
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Average Series Rating:

fourpointfive
Series Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Janelle Tenner is used to having a lot of responsibility. She balances working as a lifeguard in San Diego with an intense academic schedule. Janelle’s mother is bipolar, and her dad is a workaholic FBI agent, which means Janelle also has to look out for her younger brother, Jared.
And that was before she died…and is brought back to life by Ben Michaels, a mysterious, alluring loner from her high school. When she discovers a strange clock that seems to be counting down to the earth’s destruction, Janelle learns she has twenty-four days to figure out how to stop the clock and save the planet. (Taken from Goodreads)

Judge A Series By Its Covers:
I’ll admit it – the only reason I read Unraveling was its cover. It is pretty much perfect. I love the models, their poses, the color of the cover, everything. I also love the fact that the sequel, Unbreakable, matches the cover of the first book, Unraveling. Those two covers are absolutely gorgeous.

What I Liked:

  •  The countdown in the beginning of each chapter. The countdown looks really cool on the beginning of each chapter; plus it also gives us a sense of urgency.
  • Unraveling is full of plot twists that I just never saw coming. And I’m usually very good at predicting plot twists.
  • Elizabeth Norris isn’t afraid to kill off her own characters. Everybody is really in danger. Anybody can be killed off at any moment. Yes, even the love interest Ben can be killed off at any moment.

What I Didn’t Like:

  •  Some of my favorite characters died. How could you kill them off Elizabeth Norris?! -sobs-
  •  There are only two books in the series. I want more!

Do I Recommend It?
Yes! A million times yes! You guys, you have got to read this series, especially if you’re a fan of Veronica Mars, the X-Files, and Alias. The Unraveling duology is beyond awesome.

Favorite Book in the Series:

  •  Unraveling: I liked everything about Unraveling: the mystery surrounding Ben, Janelle’s mission to save the world, the many plot twists, and especially how everything just clicked in place at the end of the book.

Favorite Character(s):

  •  Janelle of course. That girl has some major courage. Janelle is not afraid to put herself in danger just to save the world and she bravely admits her own mistakes. The only thing I would change about Janelle is to make her do something about Kate and her friends’ bullying.

Effortlessly Quotable:

  •  Quotes from Unraveling soon to come.
  •  …because if the good guys are going to cross that line and torture someone, what is it that separates them from the bad guys? (Unbreakable, 196)

I know! Elizabeth Norris said that if there’s another book in the duology, it won’t be about Janelle and Ben. ):

Aww I’ve always wanted to read this one! And YES the covers are fabulous :D I’m kinda scared though, since you mentioned the dying favorites. But seeing as you recommended it, I’ll give it a try :)

Ha ha, yeah the dying favorites is such a huge downside. -cries-
But the Unraveling duology is definitely worth reading!

Ahem. I apologise, I lost my mind for a second. I’m still upset about the death of one of my favourite characters. I love Elizabeth for doing it, because that was courageous and skillful, but I also hate her a little bit because I loved them *sobs*

I totally agree, Janelle is a badass, and I WANT MORE BOOKS. I’m hoping for a spin-off prequel series featuring Barclay, maybe in his training days or something I don’t know. Just give me Barclay!

I like how you set up this review. And even though when you love a series, it is nice to see it go on and one. It is kinda nice to ‘stand out’ and only have two books.

I need to add this to my TBR!

It is nice to have two books, except when you want more like I do. The author should write, like, ten books in this series. ;D
And definitely add this series to your TBR Jenn! You definitely won’t regret it!

To be honest, I haven’t heard of Elizabeth Norris and her books, Kelly. But after reading this, I might give it a try. It’s a good thing that there are only 2 books. xD Meaning, I don’t have to keep waiting for the next to come out. :D

Yeah, I’m glad that there’s only two books in the series, but at the same time, I want MORE. If you get what I mean. :P

Hahaha! I actually purchased the novella and the first book, Kelly. :D But it may take me some time to read it since I still have to finish some other pending ARCs and other must-reads.

Is the entire series two books, or are there more that have yet to be published? I’m a fan of shorter series, personally. Harry Potter was the longest series I ever read.

Ah, I totally need to read this series! My sis is obsessed with it and was quoting lines to me WHILE she was reading the book. I didn’t even know it was only a duology — and I’m surprised she ends up killing off main people! Now I’m super curious :D

Trust your sister’s opinion! The Unraveling duology is BEYOND awesome. At one point, I even had 5 signed copies of Unbreakable. That’s how much I love this series. (I say “at one point” because I gave away some of my copies.) :P
