Let’s Speculate: Copying & Pasting – aka Faking Comments

letsspeculate

Ever since one of my close blogging friends, Cee from The Novel Hermit posted about annoying meme comments, I’ve been noticing them more and more. And like her, I just can’t help but make a post ranting about them.

Like Cee explained, annoying meme comments are when people “leave the most generic comments that make me conclude that they didn’t read the post at all,” such as “Great pick! Thanks for sharing!” or even “Great list! Check out mine!” (The second one definitely hit a nerve with me. I don’t think I need to explain why.)

Admit it, you’ve seen it too.

I had this happen a lot to my Top Ten Tuesday and my Waiting On Wednesday memes, and even my Stacking the Shelves meme, but I’ve never noticed it much or quite minded it until Cee made a post about it and discussed it. From then on, every time I got an annoying comment, I was mad.

The worst part is when I notice that the exact same person who is visiting my blog every two weeks (or sometimes every week), writing, or should I say copying & pasting the exact same comment on my memes. And that’s not all, I’m not the only person they do that to. (It is quite obvious when people copy & paste the same thing to every blog you know because people do talk or visit other blogs. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what’s happening.) This makes me mad beyond words.

copypaste

Copying and pasting money is okay. Copying and pasting comments is not.

Yes, I know you want to increase your page views which is why you stop by other blogs, but there are no shortcuts. Seriously, why are you commenting on other blogs the first place when you can’t take the time to post genuine comments? Again, there are no shortcuts to blogging. (If there is one that I don’t know of, I’ll love to know.)

So here’s what’s up: If I see any comment like that again, I’m ignoring it. That includes “Great stack! Happy reading!” (Why is it great? I don’t require you to write a paragraph or even two sentences about my haul, but tell me, why do you think it’s great?) or “Great list! Here’s mine” (the same thing applies). So if you never ever get a response from me, hey, at least you know why now.

I hope I don’t come across as a you-know-what in this, but I just can’t stand when people do this.

How about you? How you noticed this problem before? Are you raging over it like I currently am? And isn’t Cee a genius? ;D

I definitely have at this happen before. But I will tell you the absolute worse was when I wrote a review about a book I strongly disliked and someone commented along the lines of so glad you liked it, great review.

But I agree. It is super easy to tell, especially when you see the exact same generic comment on someone else’s blog. It makes me lose almost all interest in replying back/going to check out the blog.

So you’re not the only one that happens to! I was so confused, I obviously gave the book 1 to 2 stars, yet the person thought I liked the book? Like whaat. Wow, I’ve never realized people did this for book reviews too until you’ve mentioned it. :l
I’m not even going to bother to pretend I have some interest in replying back when they do this. I’m just going to ignore the comment and pretend that it doesn’t even exist. :P

I used to get that all the time when I participated in memes. It’s SO annoying! (I hope I never did that when I was a noob!)

Even now, I have one person in particular that posts almost the EXACT same comment on every Heartbeat Weekly post she comments on, starting with the exact same word and ending with a link to hers. She does vary, I’ll give her credit for that…but most of them are generic and they just annoy me. I’d rather not get the comment at all! I don’t mind a “happy reading” if it’s from a bloggy friend that visits all the time and follows my blog faithfully, but when it’s from a random stranger just to link to their post, it’s annoying as hell!

It’s so annoying and like you said, I rather them not comment at all! Sometimes, I just want to label the comment as “spam.”

I will actually admit to doing this on Memes when I first started blogging this year as I felt I needed to get the stats on my blog but the more I noticed it happened on my posts the more agitated I got, then I understood how everyone else might be feeling. I actually feel ashamed I did such a thing because it’s not fair to any blogger who sits and writes out a post that could take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours to create, as I understand myself just how much it hurts for my posts not really being taken into any consideration.

I urge anyone who does/did what I did to stop because not only are they upsetting the bloggers but they’ll also be upsetting themselves when they see it reflected back that no one wants to interact with them. It is definitely something I have learnt from completely, now I take the time to looks and read everything as much as possible. and the fact is you don’t have to post on every single post or meme that becomes available.

So to conclude I’d like to apologise to you and any other blogger that I may have put a thoughtless comment on and to just urge anyone else to stop.

It’s okay that you used to do this Georgie; at least you learned from your mistakes and figured out what you were doing was wrong, admitted it, and accepted it. Don’t be too hard on yourself! (:
Ha ha, I can’t believe I forgot to add that point – the more people are doing it, the more other people won’t want to interact with the people doing it.
And don’t worry, you haven’t done that to me & I’m sure other people will accept your apology too if you don’t ever do that ever again!

This is one of the reasons I hardly participate in memes anymore.. I don’t like how everyone is simply saying ‘nice books, here is my haul.’ I do my haul in another post, so there is more to comment on. And I hate it when I see the same comment from the same person on every blog. At least TRY to put more effort in it. I sometimes feel like I type the same things when I do meme hopping, but I try to change what I’m saying and put more personal things in it.

Exactly Mel! I try spicing up my comment by putting more personal things to it like “oh my friend LOVED [book’s name]” or “I head that [book’s name] was amazing!”

Ive noticed them on blogs and I never gave a second thought about it until you pointed it out. Looking back, that indeed sounded a little like cheating. If I wanted to promote my blog, I’d post genuine comments, even though it takes much longer than just copying and pasting. By the way, that copying and pasting money gif’s totally cool. It’s a great way to get money…

To me, it’s 100% cheating. It’s also like a slap in the face – if you truly care for blogging, if blogging is truly your passion, and if you really want to interact with new people, you won’t do that so why are you blogging anyway?

I admit it, I have seen it too. The other one that strikes a nerve is “Hopping Through!” followed by a link to their meme. I always try to say something particular about the given post, even if it’s as simple as I loved book X, Y, or Z or that I have such and such on my TBR too. At least then the blogger knows I’ve taken the time to read the post.

I am SO lucky I’ve never gotten a “Hopping Through!” with a link comment because I will EXPLODE. I will probably trash that comment in anger. Or maybe comment back “And I’ll ignore you. (:” with my own haul link or something like that. Seriously, that is just plain rude.
That’s what I do too! If I don’t know any of the books the person got, I’ll put something along the lines of “I’ve never heard of [the book titles] before, but I hope you’ll enjoy them all! (:” to show them that hey, I did read their post and that I didn’t put a copy & paste comment.

It’s one of the reasons I rarely do memes anymore. It’s annoying to see the same type of comments, “Hey cool [insert meme name here] here’s mine!” type of comments. For me, if I don’t have anything to say about the post, I don’t say it since I know how I’d feel if I found a generic comment on my own blog.

Hopefully that’ll help me with my situation.

I’ve noticed this happening on my blog and other blogs, but I never really gave a thought to it until I read this. And your right, it’s just kind of like why bother commenting on other people’s blog if you won’t give a comment that you put thought into. I can understand if you give a simple, generic comment on somebodies blog if you just don’t know what to say. This has happened to me a few times, usually when I’m visiting a blog of a person who comment on a meme post of mine and I always feel awful about it, because they put thought into their comment and I put a generic comment out there just because I didn’t know what to say. But if you don’t put any thought in the comment then it’s like why even bother. And it’s worse if you didn’t even read the post, then it seems like the whole commenting system is useless. You comment to have a conversation with a person and if you won’t hear/read what they have to say then it’s like the whole idea of commenting is useless.
I’m also guilty for half of this. Most of my comments on people’s meme posts start with either ‘great haul’ or ‘great list’. I always put more in the comment then just that, but I almost always start the comment with it. And I don’t know why, I generally don’t know I do this. Maybe because it’s a why to ease into the ‘conversation’ without being blunt. I don’t know O.o

Starting off your comment with “Great haul!” is perfectly okay Kimberly, but only if you add some non-generic comment after. The ones I’m talking about in my post is pretty much just “Great haul, here is mine [link].” Your comments are so much more than that so don’t worry! (:

So I refrain from nominating blogs again because I don’t feel the people appreciated it much since they didn’t take the time to read why I nominated them.. If I comment I try to be original and leave something related to the post I comment on!

Yes, yes, I am a genius. You never forget that. ;D

You already know my feelings on the subject. Lol. Finding that exact person who wrote copied and pasted the same comment is the worst because they essentially did not read or care to read the post at all. I rage so hard. Like can we not? Don’t they know that if they do that, people are unlikely to visit? (I guess not.) It’s not hard to write about something specific. A “I’m really looking forward to reading Vicious because of so and so reason” will suffice. The reason why it’s a great post or book haul is what we, as bloggers, are looking for. I like knowing why people are excited about certain things or books. Just tell me.

That’s why I decided not to put my post link in the meme linkys or whatever on the advice of a friend. Ever since my discussion post, I’ve noticed that friends/followers are actually not making generic comments. I think it’s because those are the people who are actually care and are interested in what I have to say. It’s super awesome.

(You don’t come off as a queen B in this. It’s milder compared to mines. LOL.)

Or even mentioning the book’s name like “Oh you got Vicious!” would suffice. I don’t mind that because that at least shows that they read the post or that they took the time to look at the pictures and wrote the name of the book down.
I like putting my link down on the memes though since most of the time (90%) I do not get generic comments from other people. It’s just that 10% that always ruins things for us. ):

    THIS! THIS! ALL OF THIS!

I know how you feel. It’s so irritating when it happens but there’s not really anything you can do to stop it. And I expect it when I sign up for memes, which is kind of sad… Most people now actually have at least one sentence relating to the post before we get to the “great list/pick” part and the link to theirs. But there’s still the few with nothing original to say…

Sometimes I can be guilty of leaving such a comment on meme. Usually this is when I am returning a meme comment and NOTHING about what they chose/received is similar to my tastes at all. So I say something along the lines of “Not familiar with anything, but hope you like them :)” and feel terrible that I can’t say more.

I usually end up ignoring them, and moving on. It reflects badly on them, and I don’t get too annoyed with it. I guess I’m still at the honeymoon stage in blogging where it’s a big deal if anyone even gets to our blog, so I’m pretty forgiving of most comments. They indicate traffic, which is one of their uses imo. Of course, I don’t want that kind of traffic from people that won’t read the posts, but it hasn’t been a big issue for us yet.

I’ve totally been noticing that too and it erks me that people really can’t take the extra 10 secs to make it the tiny-tiniest more personal. Like the STS post, how hard is it to pick and identify with one book and say “I like that book too” etc etc or even, “never heard of these, but hope you enjoy”. I really don’t mind people linking up their post after (it’s very helpful actually), but when it’s obvious that it’s just for stats it makes me sad. Why should I put the effort to checking out yours when you obviously didn’t check out mine.

I think the one type of meme where it doesn’t bother me is the Waiting on Wednesday/Wishlist Wednesday type of post. Because a lot of times, I’ll go check out someone’s post, see that it’s not a book that interests me in the slightest, but want to let the blogger know I’ve stopped by, so I’ll leave a generic comment along the lines of “Sounds interesting! I hope you get it soon!” which, of course, is what everyone else says too. I’m really not cutting and pasting, even though it might sound that way! But yes, I agree when it comes to posts like top 10 lists or book hauls — say something real, or at least something that shows that you read what I wrote, and I’ll be motivated to visit you and do the same!

THIS. THIS. THIS. Honestly, this is why I’m so slow to reply to people (not on the blog but as in going to THEIR blog and replying there) because I want to write a GENUINE comment and yeah I just can’t breeze through 50 blogs a day and do that. It takes me a few minutes to look through the post and then another couple minutes (or more depending on what I want to say) to write a comment. I know that some people feel bad if they don’t get replies back, but I feel like I’d rather them get a GENUINE reply on their blog than a generic one and if that means I can’t get there as often – or admit I have nothing to add to the conversation, then I just DON’T. (I feel guilty about that but I just hate disingenuous comments that much that I refuse to give them out.)

I make it a point to visit the blogs first who have written genuine comments and then if there’s extra time, I’ll check out the other blogs. What I feel most guilty about is when someone has written a genuine comment on MY blog nad then I just can’t find a post where I can find something meaningful to say because we don’t read the same types of books or it’s mostly memes that I can’t say anything about, etc. That’s when I feel guilty because I REALLY do want to return comments that someone took the time to read the post and write something for. Usually I reply to all the comments on my own blog first before visiting around, so at least if I can’t find something meaningful to say on THEIR blog, they’re still getting SOME feedback from me that I appreciate their comment (at least I hope they get that!) :)

Great discussion topic, I think this has been an aggravation for many of us who have been blogging for awhile. It does seem to be the newbies who do it most often, but then again I’ve seen some “nowhere near newbies” do it too, where they only vary their comment SLIGHTLY. :/

I’m now incredibly paranoid that I may have been general in a comment on your blog before. :/
I find it difficult to balance reading/commenting on everyone’s blog with posting content on my own, and everything else that makes up my life. So sometimes I might say something supportive but general, not because I’m trying to get traffic to my blog or didn’t read your post, but because I don’t feel like I have anything meaningful to add, but I did read it, and the comment box is right there, so I might as well let you know your audience is this large by commenting. Should I just NOT comment, if I can’t add something specific? :/

I have a commenter who typically posts these completely generic comments on my meme posts once or twice a week. As you said, I see the identical comments on other blogs, and I never bother visiting her blog because I find it so annoying. And yet, she continues to comment on my blog, and so I can only conclude that she does this “carpet-bombing commenting” (can we make that the official term?) with such frequency that she can’t even keep track of the blogs she visits.

I don’t understand the purpose of this. I have a feeling we are all talking about the same one or two people. If their ultimate goal is page views, don’t they realize how much more effective it would be to write ten thoughtful comments (and a thoughtful comment can be a sentence or two) rather than 100 carpet-bombed comments?

Argh. I totally, totally agree. Cee’s post was probably one of my favorite, and most relatable discussion posts of the year because I just totally got it. I see this happening so much. There are some people that comment the exact same thing on my blog every week, and then as I’m checking out other posts I see the exact same comment on other blogs as well. Like zero difference. To be honest, it almost makes me want to stop linking up to these memes and just post it on my blog… at least then the people who subscribe to me will see it and they always leave me genuine, wonderful comments. So to answer your question, yes, I am raging over it too :) And P.S. You don’t come across as a you know what :)

Ugh I totally agree. Whenever I see people doing that, it makes me want to say something to them. Even when I used to go around meme linky lists and comment on all of them, I never copy and pasted entire comments. I did have a bit of HTML with my meme post copied up, but then I always added more to the comment. So for example, if it was a WoW post, I’d have something like this copied up:

    Here’s my WoW

But then when I got to the blog I’d add something like:

OMG I’m so excited for this book too! I read the first one in that series a few weeks ago and adored it!! O_O This one can’t come quickly enough! Great pick. :)
    Here’s my WOW

But then you see people who just mass spam something like:

Great choice. I hadn’t heard of that one before. Here’s my WOW.

And you see the exact same comment on every single blog. Sheesh. I always ignore those and never visit their blog.

Memes are tricky. They’re fun for the blogger to create, but I think many of them are not engaging for readers, which is why comments on these posts have a tendency to be pretty lame. I don’t know which is better (or worse?): the blogger who hops by and leaves a copy-paste comment or the blogger (like me) who avoids posts like weekly book hauls because they know they won’t comment. At least the copy-paster is giving you traffic?

I don’t really get upset when I receive these comments. Maybe I’ve grown to expect them with certain posts. i just usually ignore them. When I see them, I assume the individual puts as much effort into their own content as they did in the comment they just left.

I find that memes really don’t always open up too much discussions. I mean really people are using them usually only to get people to stop by the blog and maybe follow. But does anyone really follow anyone from memes? I don’t stop back by their blogs… I just say thanks and move onto the next comment. Memes just really are like this… sometimes I find that Top Ten Tuesday can spark more of a conversation then others. I really just don’t do memes .. only every now and then.

I hate the “Great haul/pick, happy reading!” comments! There’s one blogger who comments just about every week with that and I’ve seen them post the EXACT thing on other blogs, when I’m making my rounds on meme day. I know I’m not the best commenter, but I do read the post and comment if I have something to say, even if it’s just something quick but relevant.

Please don’t hate me. I’ve been doing them.

I don’t mean to post generic ones. Not to promote a blog of some sort but honestly.. just wanting to be apart of the ‘blogsphere’ you see. I love to read, I love to write, I love reading blogs, you’d think the next step is to actually have my own blog not hide my thoughts away in a journal, but it’s not.

So far my replies have been that outlet. I can reply to someones great haul because I appreciate it and I do my best to tell them what I want to read in the future. Sometimes I just think that their haul is great, and know that someone is reading.

I do understand your frustration but dear all bloggers, be kind, like effortlessly reading says it’s annoying I get it, and you don’t feel like we’re really reading your post but I believe we are. :)

Ew, I’ve never even thought of copying and pasting comments. One thing I get frustrated with as a commenter is one I read a great post and I can’t think of anything to say but I WANT TO SO BAD, especially when it’s an awesome post.

I’ve also observed people who copy-paste the same comment on every post for a meme. When I see that happening, I just mark the comment as spam :)

I’ve seen it happen and I’ve had it happen to me. When I leave comments, I want to leave a meaningful one. Otherwise I don’t leave a comment at all.

I don’t know if I ever had this, but I do know is that I get the most views and comments on the memes I do, and I am pretty sure there are some people out there that have commented anything like that. *is going to check very soon* It’s kind of annoying, if you don’t have anything useful to say, why stop by these blogs in the first place?

(I love that gif, btw, I wish that was possible)

This is a good point; however, I’ll also say that there are some posts where it’s hard to say much else about it. If your meme post is just a list of books (for TTT) or a book title and description (for WoW), and you don’t talk about why you made the choices you did or something to make the post your own, there’s going to be very little to comment on. Granted, it’s still probably better to not comment at all in those cases… but meaningful communication goes both ways.

(That’s not directed at YOU, or anyone in particular, just something I’ve noticed while browsing blogs.)
