ARC Book Review: This Shattered World – Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

thisshatteredworldThis Shattered World
Author: Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Series: Starbound #2
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Science Fiction, Fantasy
Release Date: December 23, 2014
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Goodreads | Amazon | TBD

Summary:

The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.
Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.
Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet’s rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.
Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.
Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

First Sentence: There’s a guy staring at me from the other end of the bar.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.

My Review:

I wasn’t sure what to expect of This Shattered World. I enjoyed These Broken Stars, but didn’t love it enough to be so impressed with it. There were also some early negative reviews of This Shattered World, which made me ultra nervous because what if I’m the black sheep for This Shattered World too? I’m usually the black sheep for most books, so the probability for me not enjoying This Shattered World was high. However, to my surprise, I found myself really enjoying This Shattered World and I dare say this: I actually enjoyed This Shattered World more than I enjoyed reading These Broken Stars.

He grunts, and the barrel of the gun digs more sharply into my rib cage. But he doesn’t let me go. He’s good. Damn, damn, DAMN. (ARC 9)

You’ve probably heard this by now, but there are Lilac and Traver cameos in This Shattered World and when I saw them, I was beyond excited. They are just so cute together and the cameos made me realize how much I’ve missed them. This Shattered World also continues on the plot of These Broken Stars and goes into more depth about the things we’ve explored in These Broken Stars. Let me tell you a secret of mines: I was really confused with some world-building aspects of These Broken Stars and This Shattered World clarified and went answered all my lingering questions.

The main difference between This Shattered World and These Broken Stars is that there is a lot more action in This Shattered World. Right from the very start, we are shoved into the middle of the action and I loved every single moment of it. The pacing of the entire book was well done and I can promise you guys, there was never a boring moment. I really liked the fact that This Shattered World wasn’t as romance focused like These Broken Stars was.

“You shot me, Romeo.” I give a savage jerk on the rope, but all it does is send a jolt of pain through my shoulders.
“You jumped to the conclusion I was up to something.” Romeo glares down at me, jaw tight…”I’d rather die trust myself to TerraDyn’s laws or the military’s idea of enforcing them.” (ARC 57)

The only thing I didn’t like all that much in This Shattered World was the chapter introductions – I actually have no idea what to call them, so I’ll just call them chapter introductions. Like These Broken Stars, This Shattered World started with a short snippet of a story and continues on with the story at the beginning of each chapter. These Broken Stars‘s story was fun to read and I totally got the story right from the beginning, but This Shattered World‘s story was really confusing until the last fifth of the book when everything was all explained.

Overall, I definitely can’t wait to read the last book in the Starbound trilogy. I’m really curious about what characters Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner would introduce us to next. Hopefully I’ll adore the last book in the trilogy as much as I adored These Broken Stars and This Shattered World.

I just read These Broken Stars a couple days ago and really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to reading This Shattered World, especially if there is more action! I loved Lilac and Tarver but I’m excited to read from two brand new character POV’s. Great review Kelly! Hopefully I’ll get my hands on This Shattered World soon!

OMG, I just finished this book last night and felt the same way! Loved the action and further world-building, but wasn’t so keen on the snippets between chapters. They made more sense in the first book, but I still liked this one more. Do you know which author wrote which character for each book? I’m assuming that’s what they did since the voices are nicely different for each, unlike in, say, Allegiant by Veronica Roth, when I’d get a few pages into a chapter and forget whose POV I was reading. I could be wrong, because I don’t see anything about who wrote whom anywhere. Anyway, great review!

I would know which author wrote which character for each book if I had attended the book signing in my area about five days ago, but sadly I couldn’t since it was COLDDDDD that day.
But I’m sure that each author wrote a different voice! I’ve met both Amie and Meagan last year and I remember them saying that – I just don’t remember who wrote who.

I love that we get more action on an inhabited planet!! And I believe the romance works well in the book – it fits well with the plot and the politics we get to see. I really like how we get cameos as well!!

It’s awesome the sequel made the first book make more sense – and how great is it to see a sequel that really moves the plot forward :)

    Lovely review :)

I remember when I first saw the cover of This Shatter World, I had no idea at the time that it was actually the second story to the Starbound trilogy. It looks nothing like the first book’s cover except their similarity to floating in the air/space…It actually took me a while to realize it was thee second book haha. I’m glad you liked it though. I haven’t read book 1 yet, so hopefully by the time I want to start getting these books, book 3 will almost be out. I don’t want to wait too long. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as the other two! n_n

I knew This Shattered World was the second book to the Starbound trilogy because they use the same font + pose style.
You don’t have to worry about waiting until book three is out – both These Broken Stars and This Shattered World don’t have any cliffhangers. ;D

I surprisingly enjoyed These Broken Stars. A lot more than I thought that I would. So, I have been looking forward to delving into This Shattered World for a while. Knowing that you enjoyed it, and more than the first book, makes me think I may just love it too. I am glad that there is more action in this one, than romance, even though I thoroughly enjoyed Lilac and Tarver together.

I loved this one and I agree, the cameos were adorable. I think the “chapter headings” in TBS worked SO much better than in this book. It was easy to understand since it was a military debriefing in TBS, but this took most of the book to even know why it was happening. They did this in the novella too and it confused me a few times. I know to expect it now from this series, but I hope the next book is much clearer.

It’s very well written and the story is good, especially how it ends. If you like a story really focused on the two characters and what I call a “trail ride plot” you’ll love this story. It’s all about surviving. It’s a very fresh setting, and so forth. Go for it!

    Hi Kelly!

Wonderful review for This Shattered World! I personally agree with you on the fact that this novel is rather confusing and there is definitely more action than there was in These Broken Stars.

I am currently only half way through the story and I think the thing that is really making me enjoy this book so far is the ‘girl power’. I really am glad the the so called ‘powerful’, feared character in This Shattered World is a woman, and how careers that are stereotypically reserved for men all too frequently, are given to Jubilee. In that aspect, this novel kind of reminds me of the Lunar Chronicles, especially in terms to Cinder who is a mechanic.

I am also looking forward to the final installment of the Starbound trilogy.
